How it works

Scan and consultation. A duplex ultrasound scan, done standing, shows exactly which valves are leaking. You see the results as they happen, and leave with a diagnosis and a written plan.

A plan for your leg. We explain the options that suit your anatomy, what each involves, the risks, recovery and cost. You are never asked to decide on the day.

Walk-in, walk-out treatment. Most treatments are done as a day case under local anaesthetic, through a needle puncture. You walk out and are back at a desk within about two days.
Treatments

EVLA (laser ablation) — seals the leaking vein from inside with laser energy.

Radiofrequency ablation — the same principle, using controlled heat.

Foam sclerotherapy — closes twisted or recurrent veins with an ultrasound-guided injection.

Phlebectomy — removes bulging veins through 2–3 mm punctures.

Thread veins — microsclerotherapy, after a scan to check for hidden leaks.

Why one surgeon matters
At many clinics, the person who scans you, the person who treats you and the person who follows you up are three different people. At Anglia Vein Clinic, Mr John Prionidis PhD FRCS does all of it. He interprets every scan, plans and performs every procedure, and sees you at every follow-up. The person holding the catheter already knows the anatomy of your leg.
Mr Prionidis is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust with 24 years' experience in vascular surgery. His doctorate was in venous haemodynamics. Treatment follows current NICE guidance: endovenous thermal ablation first where it is suitable, with foam, phlebectomy or open surgery where anatomy demands. Meet Mr Prionidis
Are varicose veins just cosmetic?
No. They are the visible sign of a circulation problem underneath, and they tend to progress. Aching, heaviness and swelling build over years; the skin around the ankle can darken and harden; and in a minority, ulcers form. Treatment is simpler, and results better, before the skin is damaged. If your symptoms affect daily life, your ankle skin has changed, or you have had a clot or ulcer, it is worth an assessment.

Do I need a GP referral? No. Self-pay patients can book directly; insured patients should check whether their insurer needs one.

Will I be awake? Usually, under local anaesthetic. General anaesthetic is available if you prefer.
